Initial AGR Hires

All new AGRs must accept or decline Chapter 30 during their window, even if they accepted or declined during a previous period of service. 


Servicemembers have the option to opt out of MGIB-AD CH30, if they would instead like to use their initial AGR time to earn the Post 9/11 GI Bill CH33. To learn more about the Post 9/11 GI Bill CH33, please see "Post /11 GI Bill" tab at the top of this page.

Between date of hire and day 180

        - Contact your State/Territory’s ESO and receive counseling

        - If opting in, it is important that you communicate your decision to your ESO as soon as possible


Between day 180 and day 270

       - Complete a DD Form 2366 with your ESO (DD Form 2366-1 if opting for the Plus up)

       - Register your Opt-In or Opt-Out decision in IPPS-A


After day 270

       - Check LES for deductions


Important! If you don’t opt-out by day 270, IPPS-A will send a file to DFAS to begin deductions

What Is It?

  The Montgomery GI Bill – Active Duty (MGIB-AD), is a GI Bill Program for SMs who serve on their FIRST Active-Duty period for at least two continuous years.

How Do You Qualify?

Active Duty:

   - Serve on qualifying active-duty service on or after July 1, 1985

   - Serve as a Title 10 or Title 32 AGR on or after November 29, 1989

   - Complete 

          - At least 36 months of service, or

          - At least 24 months of service if the orders are for less than 36 months


Mobilization:

   - Complete a mobilization of at least 2 continuous years (730 days or more)


Contribute $1,200

   - Lump Sum

   - Payroll reduction of $100 per month for first 12 months of duty

What Makes You INELIGIBLE?

A SM is ineligible if they:


- Graduated from a Service Academy (West Point, Air Force Academy, Naval Academy, etc.)

- Received a ROTC Scholarship under Title 10 USC Section 2107, and received more than $3,400 in each year of the scholarship

- Previously enrolled in MGIB-AD (will retain previous enrollment)

- Ever declined MGIB-AD

- Receive less than an Honorable discharge from this period of service

What Is Plus-Up?

An option to increase the monthly payment is available for SM who :

- Opt in to the MGIB-AD program

- Contribute up to an additional $600 in $5 increments


For each $5 contributed, the payment increases by $20


Maximum contribution of $600 = $150 per month in addition to the regular MGIB-AD payment


Must be serving on active duty to enroll

What Do You Get?

The monthly rates are based on:

- How many years of service you have completed

- The type of training you are getting

- How many courses you are taking

- How far you are along on your OJT or apprenticeship program

Three Year Rate - Colleges/Trade Schools

Traditional College/University, and Non-College Degree programs (Vocational or Trade schools) 

*current rates as of 01 OCT 2024


- Full-time enrollment: $2,438 per month

- ¾-time enrollment: $1,828 per month

- ½-time enrollment: $1,219 per month

- Less than ½-time: $1,219 per month, or the cost of tuition and fees, whichever is less

- ¼-time enrollment or less $609 per month, or the cost of tuition and fees, whichever is less

Three Year Rate - OJT/Correspondence/Flight Training

On-the-Job-Training and Apprenticeships 

*current rates as of 01 OCT 2024

- Must work at least 120 hours each month

- Months 1-6: $1,828 per month

- Months 7-12: $1,340 per month

- Rest of training: $853 per month


Correspondence Training

- 55% of the established cost. Paid after completion of each course


Flight training

- 60% of the approved charges

Two Year Rate - Colleges/Trade Schools

Traditional College/University 

*current rates as of 01 OCT 2024


- Full-time enrollment: $1,978 per month

- ¾-time enrollment: $1,483 per month

- ½-time enrollment: $989 per month

- Less than ½-time: $989 per month, or the cost of tuition and fees, whichever is less

- ¼-time enrollment or less $494 per month, or the cost of tuition and fees, whichever is less

Two Year Rate - OJT/Correspondence/Flight Training

On-the-Job-Training and Apprenticeships

- Must work at least 120 hours each month

- Months 1-6: $1,483.50 per month

- Months 7-12: $1,087.90 per month

- Rest of training: $692.30 per month


Correspondence Training

- 55% of the established cost. Paid after completion of each course


Flight training

- 60% of the approved charges
